Within Child & Family Services Law Development
Nation-Led Community Engagement
The community is not consulted about a law that has already been written. The community helps shape the law from the beginning.

Sacred Circle Justice Services designs and facilitates engagement with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, leadership, parents, families, youth, staff and community members.
Engagement is used to identify the Nation’s laws, values, responsibilities, traditions, priorities and community expectations before drafting begins.

Who we hear from
Different people hold different parts of a Nation’s law. Engagement is designed so each can speak to what they carry.
Elders & Knowledge Keepers
Teachings, customary practices, oral history and traditional approaches to responsibility and dispute resolution.
Leadership
Direction, mandate, governance structure and the Nation’s priorities.
Parents & Families
What the law must protect, what it must require, and what has to change.
Youth
What future generations need the law to carry forward.
Staff & Administrators
Operational realities, and what a law has to account for to actually work.
Community Members
Lived experience, expectations and the community’s own sense of what is right.
Engagement runs through all our work
Engagement is most extensive in child and family law development, where the law touches every family in the Nation. It also shapes lawmaking and justice work.
