Justice & Dispute Resolution

A First Nations law requires a First Nations process for interpreting, applying and enforcing it.

Peacemaking, restorative processes, community justice structures, diversion and dispute-resolution systems — built as part of the Nation’s own legal order.

Peacemaking Circles & Restorative Justice

Sacred Circle Justice Services supports the development of First Nations-based peacemaking and Circle processes as alternatives to adversarial dispute resolution.

Circle processes can provide culturally grounded mechanisms for addressing conflict, repairing relationships, restoring accountability and allowing those affected by a dispute to be heard.

These processes can be adapted for community disputes, family matters, organizational conflicts and other circumstances where a Nation wishes to develop an alternative dispute resolution mechanism grounded in First Nations values and restorative justice principles.

Build Your Nation’s Own Tribunal

Many Nations create laws but also require an independent mechanism to administer disputes and appeals.

Sacred Circle Justice Services can assist with tribunal design, tribunal law and rules, appointment processes, hearing procedures, forms, ethics and conflict rules, member training, mock hearings, decision writing and implementation.

Building the capacity to carry it

A Circle process only works if the Nation has people trained to hold it. Circle Keeper & Peacemaking Training is delivered on-Nation and customized to the Nation’s laws, traditions, protocols and community priorities, so that capacity stays in the community.

Nation-Led Community Engagement shapes what these processes should look like before anything is designed.
